FOOTBALL-Shaw’s goal gives City a share of the spoils against Madrid.
MANCHESTER, England, CMC – Jamaican international Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw scored an important second-half goal to help Manchester City and Real Madrid share the spoils in a 1-1 Women’s Champions League draw here on Thursday.
Shaw’s 51st-minute strike canceled out Linda Caicedo’s first-half goal to give City their second draw in as many matches in the tournament.
Caicedo put Real ahead in the 29th minute with a clever finish, though goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita perhaps could have done better.
The home side created chances in a fairly open first half, with Shaw’s looping header tipped over after Mary Fowler earlier nodded it onto the crossbar.
City finally drew level in the early minutes of the second half, when Shaw spun in the box and finished powerfully into the far corner.
Caicedo, along with forward Felicia Schroder, continued to press forward in search of a winner, and the former went close to doubling her tally, but her effort flew wide.
City’s Lauren Hemp, Yui Hasegawa and Beth Mead all squandered chances, as neither side could add to their tally.
The result leaves City in 11th position with two points from their two games, with Real Madrid one spot below with a similar record.
