FOOTBALL-Harris sets sights on finishing the technical center during the new term

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC—Re-elected president of the Barbados Football Association (BFA) Randy Harris said finishing the national technical center will be his mission in what could be his final term as the sport’s leader on the island.

The 64-year-old, president of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) and one of three vice presidents of the Confederation of Central American & Caribbean Football (Concacaf), regained the top position during the BFA’s annual general meeting on Sunday.

Harris has held the post for the past 12 years, and he prevailed over challenger and former national goalkeeper Omari Eastmond 37-30 for another four-year term.

“I started this presidency to ensure that Barbados has its facility,” he told reporters after the election at the BFA’s headquarters, Wildey Turf.

“Football will never improve if we don’t have proper facilities; anybody will tell you that, so my mission, which will be my last term, is to ensure that our technical center is completed.

Harris has come under increasing scrutiny recently because the men’s and women’s national teams at the senior and junior levels have yet to be successful in regional competitions.

“I put myself in the race because I want to complete my mission of developing, first of all, the facility, and then looking at getting serious about programs, mostly junior programs because we have to look to the future of football in Barbados,” he said.

“I want to thank the members for having confidence in me again, and I just want to say to the challenger that he put up a good fight. He has something to give to football, and I hope this loss doesn’t cause him to feel he is not welcome to assist.

Barbados is currently 177th in the world in the FIFA men’s rankings and 160th in the women’s rankings.
