LONDON, CMC – Reggae Boy Di’Shon Bernard has joined newly promoted English Championship club Sheffield Wednesday after becoming a free agent in the summer.

The North England club announced the signing of the 22-year-old center-back on Monday but did not disclose the length of the contract.

Bernard, who has played four times for Jamaica since his debut last June, was a free agent following the expiry of his contract with giants Manchester United at the end of last season.

“To new beginnings,” Bernard said on his official Instagram account.

He joined the Reds’ youth system at 16 after coming through Chelsea’s academy but spent most of his time on loan in three league divisions with Portsmouth, Salford City, and Hull.

Bernard made one appearance for Man United, featuring in a 2019 Europa League 2-1 defeat away to Astana, when then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielded a side of academy graduates for the long Kazakhstan assignment, with the side having already qualified for the final 32.

The outing was not a flattering one for Bernard, however, scoring an own-goal as United conceded two second-half goals seven minutes after leading 1-0 at the break.

Bernard described as a ball-playing defender, was a part of the Jamaica squad that reached the advanced stages of the CONCACAF Gold Cup earlier this month.

He is Wednesday’s fifth signing ahead of the season, which gets underway Friday, with Reece James, Juan Delgado, Ashley Fletcher, and Pol Valentin coming in during the current window.

Nicknamed the Owls, Wednesday finished third in League One with 96 points, barely missing out on automatic promotion but eventually sealing their rise through the playoffs.
