FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, CMC — Inter Miami CF took a significant step toward advancing in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup following a 2-0 victory over Jamaican side Cavalier FC in the first leg of their Round of 16 series here on Thursday at Chase Stadium.
However, Cavalier head coach Rudolph Speid remains optimistic, promising a motivated and determined performance in the second leg next week in Kingston, Jamaica.
Despite the defeat, Speid praised his team’s effort and emphasized that the tie was far from over. “I’m just happy that the team could give a good account of itself. It’s not over, even at 2-0; we haven’t given up. We’re returning to Jamaica to rest and wait for them to come down there.”
The Jamaica Premier League champions showed glimpses of their potential, nearly breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute when Jalmaro Calvin’s deflected attempt struck the woodwork.
However, Inter Miami’s quality eventually shone through as Tadeo Allende opened the scoring in the 61st minute with a powerful left-footed strike from the center of the box, courtesy of a pinpoint assist from Sergio Busquets. Luis Suárez sealed the win in the 83rd minute, showcasing his trademark composure with a precise left-footed finish at the far post.
Despite the setback, Speid remains confident in his team’s ability to turn the tie around. “Well, we know what we have to do. Usually, it’s a little bit easier when you only have one choice. We have to score the first goal in Jamaica in that second leg.”
The Cavalier coach also believed in his players’ motivation, noting they knew the opportunity to let slip in Florida.
“I can assure you they will be motivated for the second leg even by themselves. They knew there was a missed chance for them to do something extraordinary. It didn’t happen, and there’s still a chance of it coming up next week on Thursday.”
