ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Amir Jangoo, Tion Webster, and Terrance Hinds bailed out Trinidad and Tobago Red Force with half-centuries on the second day of their opening round Regional First Class Championship match here Wednesday.
Playing on the second day at the Grenada National Stadium, Red Force clawed their way back from 82 for five to reach 315 all out in their first innings and secure a lead of 73 runs over Windward Islands Volcanoes.
The left-handed Jangoo scored 86 while Tion Webster struck 79 and Terrance Hinds 52, ensuring Red Force rallied in the face of fast bowler Ryan John’s outstanding spell of five for 18.
In their second turn at the crease, Volcanoes reached 62 without loss, with Kimani Melius unbeaten on 39 and Jerlani Robinson on 20 not out.
Resuming the morning on 50 for one in reply to Volcanoes’ 243, Red Force collapsed and saw four wickets tumble for 14 runs quickly.
Test batsman Darren Bravo, unbeaten overnight on 32, was first out in the morning’s sixth over lbw to left-arm seamer Preston McSween, triggering the slide.
Jangoo inspired the comeback in a knock that contained six fours and required 142 deliveries. He first posted 138 in a sixth-wicket stand with Webster, who counted five fours and five sixes in a rapid 86-ball knock, and then anchored a 78-run, seventh-run frame with Hinds, who lashed half-dozen fours and a couple of sixes in a 64-ball cameo.
At the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua, opener Matthew Nandu hit an unbeaten half-century as Guyana Harpy Eagles batted all day for 205 for five.
The 19-year-old left-hander struck nine fours off 219 balls, putting on 30 for the first wicket with Chanderpaul Hemraj (11), 45 for the third wicket with Kemol Savory (25), 46 for the fourth wicket with captain Leon Johnson (26) and 37 for the fifth with Anthony Bramble (20).
Nandu ensured Harpy Eagles closed well by posting a further 42 in an unbroken sixth wicket stand with Kevin Sinclair (28 not out).
At Coolidge Cricket Ground, also in Antigua, Leeward Islands Hurricanes produced a painstaking effort to reach 163 for six against Jamaica Scorpions from a full 90 overs.
Opting to bat first, Hurricanes got a top score of 40 from captain Jahmar Hamilton who struck seven fours off 102 deliveries, while opener Montcin Hodge crawled to 37 from 170 balls from three fours and a six.
Two partnerships held the innings together. First, Hamilton and Hodge put on 59 for the fourth wicket to dig the hosts out of a hole at 40 for three. When the innings slumped to 117 for six, Test all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall (29 not out) and Jeremiah Louis (17 not off) rallied their side in an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 46.
