MANCHESTER, England, CMC – Barbadian left-hander Jacob Bethell missed out on a half-century as Warwickshire got the better of the exchanges on day two of their Division One clash with Lancashire here Saturday.
The 20-year-old made 40 but, more importantly, helped anchor the best stand of the innings, bringing the visitors’ total to 284 all out in their first innings against Lancashire at Old Trafford.
Resuming the morning on 89 for three, Warwickshire lost Dan Mounsley after he added a single run to his overnight one to be 93 for four in the third over of the day.
However, Bethell arrived at the crease to revive the innings in a 74-run, fifth-wicket stand with opener and captain Alex Davies, whose unbeaten 127 came from 296 balls in just under 7-½ hours with 11 fours.
For his part, Bethell faced 107 deliveries in 126 minutes and struck three fours before finally falling lbw to 22-year-old left-arm spinner Jack Morley (2-34).
Strategically, Warwickshire’s captain, Alex Davies, anchored two other key partnerships – 42 for the sixth with Michael Burgess (24) and 40 for the eighth with Hasan Ali (29) – to help Warwickshire past the 250-run mark.
Despite Warwickshire’s strong position, Lancashire’s George Bell (40) and captain Keaton Jennings (12) put on a resilient 54 for the third wicket before Bell perished to the day’s final delivery, showing their determination in the face of a challenging situation.
