BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Tropical Storm Ernesto is expected to bring tropical storm force winds and heavy rains to portions of the Leeward Islands late on Monday night as several Caribbean countries issued tropical storm warnings to deal with the effects of the fifth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center(NHC), in its 5.00 pm bulletin, said that the storm was now located 295 miles east southeast of Antigua and had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (mph).

A tropical storm warning is in effect for St. Kitts-Nevis, Montserrat, Antigua and Barbuda, and Anguilla, as well as Guadeloupe, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy, Sint Maarten, the British Virgin Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

It said interests elsewhere in the northeastern Caribbean should monitor Ernesto’s progress, which is moving toward the west-northwest near 28 mph.

“A westward to west-northwestward motion with some decrease in forward speed is expected during the next couple of days. On the forecast track, Ernesto is expected to move across portions of the Leeward Islands late tonight or Tuesday and near or over the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by Tuesday evening,” the NHC said.

It said gradual strengthening is expected during the next few days and that Tropical Storm Ernesto will produce total rain accumulations of four to six inches over portions of the Leeward.

Elsewhere in the Caribbean, Tropical Storm Ernesto is expected to produce rain accumulations of one to four inches in the Windward Islands through Friday morning.
