WASHINGTON, CMC – The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) said Wednesday it will hold a public competition to select its Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression (RELE).
The IACHR, which is a principal and autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), said that the public competition is in accordance with the procedures established in the applicable regulations of the Inter-American system.
The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting the fulfillment of the institutional mandate of promotion and protection within the scope of the Special Rapporteurship.
The IACHR said that applications for this public competition will be accepted from April 15 to June 15 this year, in accordance with the terms established in the call for applications.
It said that the names and backgrounds of the candidates selected as finalists will be published on the IACHR website from July 27 to August 27, 2026. During that time, civil society and OAS member states may submit their observations.
“Those on the shortlist of finalists must submit a video of no more than two minutes outlining the main proposals and lines of work they plan to develop in the Special Rapporteurship on Freedom of Expression (RELE) if elected. This video will also be published on the IACHR website.”
The IACHR said it expects to complete the selection process by September 30, this year, and for the selected person to assume the position on November 1, 2026.
The IACHR is composed of seven independent members elected by the OAS General Assembly in their personal capacity and who do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
