In 2024, at age thirty-five, Allan Rai recounts a pivotal chapter of his life during the COVID-19 pandemic in Trinidad and Tobago. This memoir unfolds through weeks-long hospitalization across various facilities on the island. This narrative, whilst not a critique of the institutions, aims to inspire by showing how courage and perseverance can illuminate even in the darkest times.
Breath of Resilience in the Face of Death is an incredible story in its merit. It exhibits the strength of the human mind, body, and spirit. One of the themes explored is the fragility of one’s health, something often taken for granted, from being on a twenty-four-hour oxygen supply for weeks to being diagnosed with blood clots in both lungs and kidneys. This book explores an unfiltered insight into the health system’s limitations and the fantastic medical staff that did their best to provide care despite lacking resources. The absence of human interaction due to strict visitation almost dimmed the light within but also ignited the will to survive, to be able to hold loved ones again.
The motivation to share the experience came from being one of the lucky few to survive the ordeal. It serves as a voice for those who didn’t have the opportunity to share their story.
This recount can be used as a reminder of what we’ve been through as a people, a tool to remind us what we’ve overcome as a country, and an instrument to remember forever our loved ones we tragically lost to the COVID-19 virus.
Allan Rai is an ambitious and driven young man fueled by newfound confidence and purpose with this second chance at life. When he’s not affixed on his career as an engineering technician, he’s considered a bit of an adventure seeker or even a daredevil at times, from skydiving over the Miami Keys to ziplining over Panama. Allan Rai has an unstoppable drive to be the best version of himself for both him and his family. The battle for survival during the 18-day ordeal highlighted the ability to dig deep within, find ways to cope with adversity, and find the gift left behind.
