BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – A 59-year-old Haitian-American national was denied bail when he appeared in court here charged with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder arising out of a shooting incident here earlier this week.

Robert Joseph, who was unrepresented, appeared at the Belmopan Magistrates Court, accused of killing 40-year-old Laura Fiorito and eight-year-old Megan Klessan while injuring two other minors and firing at Fiorito’s common-law-husband.

Joseph was denied bail due to the nature of the offense and remanded to the Belize Central Prison.

Police said that the shootings occurred Tuesday at the Belmopan Market Day Plaza, and a video posted on social media showed a woman lying on the ground motionless and a girl in the pan of a pickup truck. The video also shows a boy, bloodied and screeching in pain from the bullet that hit him.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Suzette Anderson said the victims were from the Netherlands and had been living in Belize.

“So I can confirm that the shooter from the Social Security Card that we have observed about him reflects him as a Haitian American. From all indications, he was living in Belize and seemed to be the owner of a resort within the Belmopan area,” the Assistant Commissioner of Police said.
