BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC—The Speaker of the Barbados Parliament, Arthur Holder, confirmed Tuesday that Edmund Hinkson, a government legislator and the parliamentary representative for the St. James North constituency, is stepping down.

He told legislators that he had received a letter from Hinkson, dated April 22, giving notice that “I shall resign from the Parliament of Barbados for the constituency from St. James North effective Friday, 25th April 2025”.

In his letter, Hinkson thanked the Parliament and staff “for all of the courtesies that were extended to me during my period as a member”.

The letter gave no indication as to why Hinkson was stepping down. Still, in September 202, he said, “What is being widely circulated today about me resigning before the end of this year is fake news, just as much as the fake news which has been circulating over the last week about another national state of affairs.”

According to the state-owned media CBC, Minister of Educational Transformation, Chad Blackman will be the ruling Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) candidate to replace Hinkson, who indicated months ago that he was stepping down.

The governing BLP has won all 30 seats in the past two general elections. Still, one of its members, Ralph Thorne KC, resigned to join the main opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP), becoming the Opposition Leader in the Parliament.
