NASSAU, Bahamas– The former registrar of contracts in the Ministry of Works, Omas Archer, will remain in custody until Wednesday, when a magistrate will decide whether or not to grant him bail after he was arrested and charged with publishing false information about National Security Minister, Wayne Munroe.

Archer was charged with intentional libel for allegedly defaming Munroe in a voice note that went viral last month. Last week, he was arrested after police released a wanted bulletin for him alleging intentional libel.

The prosecution alleges that on March 16, 2022, Archer posted false information on WhatsApp, claiming that Munroe beat his wife in the mouth in July 2021 to cause the Cabinet minister shame and annoyance and defame his character.

On Monday, Archer, 50, pleaded not guilty to the charge of intentional libel when he appeared before Magistrate Kendra Kelly. The prosecution objected to bail, arguing that the accused was already on bail for a pending criminal case of a similar offense.

The prosecution also said they wanted to make system checks to determine whether the accused had any other outstanding warrants.

But, Archer denied that, saying he had no other outstanding warrants.

Magistrate Kelly said she would consider bail on Wednesday after the prosecution has made the proper checks.
