ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – Dominica Wednesday elected 58-year-old Sylvanie Burton as the island’s first-ever woman head of state to replace outgoing President Charles Savarin, whose two-five-year term of office ends on October 1 this year.
Burton easily defeated Mrs. Anette Sanford, who, like the government nominee, is from the Kaliangoo Territory, where the descendants of the country’s indigenous people, the Caribs, still resided.
Mrs. Burton, a former senior public servant, received 20 votes, while Mrs. Sandford received five. At least six government ministers and one opposition legislator were absent when the vote was taken.
“This is a red letter day for the people of the Kalinagoo people,’ Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit told Parliament.
