PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – Suriname and the Netherlands will increase cooperation in education after the two countries sign a cooperation agreement here.

The agreement was signed between visiting Netherlands Education Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf and his local counterpart, Henri Ori, who will pay a return visit to Amsterdam this week.

Dijkgraaf said it was important for the two countries to learn from each other in the field of education, noting, “For example, we see that many Dutch students want to do an internship in Suriname and vice versa.

“We want to make that much more possible and, at the same time, look at how we can help to strengthen Surinamese education with the knowledge and skills we have in-house,” he added.

The joint education agenda is based on four major themes, including the strengthening of legislation and regulations in Suriname, exchange between Dutch and Surinamese ministries and inspection for knowledge transfer, the strengthening of primary and secondary education, and better connection to the labor market and development and retention of talent in Suriname.

The Dutch Government Information Service said that based on the priorities, a working group from both ministries would continue to develop projects, such as linking educational institutions.

It said specific attention would be paid to improving the connection between education and the labor market and the development of the human resource sector in Suriname.

Dijkgraaf will visit Anton de Kom University and the Polytechnical College in Paramaribo during his stay here. In contrast, on his visit to the Netherlands, Ori will visit Zadkine College in Rotterdam.
