GEORGETOWN, Guyana– A Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 22-year-old
Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) woman to three years imprisonment after she was found guilty of attempting to extort GUY$10 million (One Guyana dollar=US$0.004 cents) from her ex-boyfriend by making a false rape claim,
Princess Williams, who had been on trial for the offense since last year, was found guilty on May 6 by Magistrate Rhonda Weaver at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The court heard that Williams had demanded her ex-boyfriend give her GUY$10 million to prevent her from making a false rape allegation against him. The incident occurred between January 4 and 7, 2021, in Georgetown.
Williams and the ex-boyfriend had been in a four-month relationship. They had engaged in consensual sex, after which they ended up in an argument, resulting in the break-up of the relationship.
Following the break-up, Williams sent a voice note to the ex-boyfriend, claiming that he had raped her, giving him an ultimatum to either pay up or she would make a report to that effect to the police. But after receiving the threat, the ex-boyfriend lodged a statement with the police.
After she was found guilty, Williams, on GUY$100,000 bail, was remanded to prison pending sentencing. But while being escorted to the East La Penitence Police Station, she complained of feeling unwell and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital the next day.
After receiving medical attention, she requested to use the washroom and tried to dash for freedom.
When police detained her, she had a piece of cloth wrapped around her handcuff. She was subsequently charged with escaping from lawful custody and remanded to prison.
The escape from lawful custody case is still ongoing.
