KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Operations at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) are expected to resume at 5:00 am (local time) on Friday.
The Jamaica Observer said that while the runway, terminal, and other airport facilities are in order, technicians are currently assessing the damage caused to a section of the roof of the airport’s passenger boarding pier.
A temporary fix will reportedly be made to ensure operations run smoothly amid the scheduled reopening. Meanwhile, the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay reopened on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, Jamaicans are advised to brace for more rain as a Tropical Depression has developed west of the Lesser Antilles.
According to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center, the system is not expected to intensify further. However, it is likely to bring showers over the weekend to Jamaica, raising concerns following the recent impact of Hurricane Beryl on Wednesday.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted an above-normal hurricane season for 2024. NOAA’s outlook for the Atlantic hurricane season, from June 1 to November 30, forecasts between 17 to 25 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher).
Among these, eight to 13 storms could become hurricanes.
