PCA vows to uphold and protect the rights of Trinidad citizens

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Police Complaints Authority (PCA) says it remains “committed to impartiality, and the protection of all citizens’ rights” after saying it had taken note of social media posts regarding the increase in police related killings.

“As an independent oversight body, the PCA’s statement was issued within the context of its legislative mandate, established under the Police Complaints Authority Act,” the PCA said in a statement.

The PCA said that it had become aware of the social media post responding to a July 23 statement “which expressed concern over the rise in police involved shootings since the declaration of a nationwide State of Emergency (SoE) on 18th July, 2025”.

The PCA had on July 23 issued a statement in which it expressed concern over the rise in police-involved fatal shootings during the SoE.

“In the five days since the state of emergency commenced, there have been five incidents of police-involved fatal shootings. The PCA is actively monitoring these occurrences and is committed to thoroughly investigating each incident, as mandated by its legislative authority.

“The PCA remains steadfast in its role as an independent oversight body and continues to call for accountability, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law in all police interactions with members of the public, particularly in periods of heightened security operations,” the PCA said then.

In its latest statement, the PCA said that “calls for the resignation of the Director in response to the lawful execution of the PCA’s duties are therefore noted, but will not deter the Authority from fulfilling its mandate”.

According to the social media post, the PCA director, David West, “has adopted a posture of criticism, obstruction, and antagonism toward the police.

“At a time when a crime crisis grips Trinidad and Tobago, his ongoing attacks demoralise officers and embolden criminal elements who now believe the law is more focused on policing the police than protecting the public,” the social post added.
