PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC -Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation Minister Albert Ramdin says Suriname has put together a shopping list that will be discussed with Guyana as representatives of the two countries meet in Georgetown for their annual meeting.
“This annual meeting is important to evaluate our joint progress and address bottlenecks. We will discuss important topics such as fishing licenses, border issues, and trade, but also explore new opportunities for further cooperation in the field of energy and investments,” Ramdin said
He said Paramaribo would want to discuss fishing licenses, investments, the border issue, and the development of the gas sector, among other topics, at the ministerial consultation in the context of the Strategic Dialogue and Cooperation Platform (SDCP), which was set up by the presidents of Suriname and Guyana and intended to strengthen bilateral cooperation at various levels.
The consultation will focus on promoting cooperation in various strategic areas, and Ramdin said working groups will discuss, among other things, agriculture, political relations, energy, trade, and investments.
He said the issue of fishing licenses has been on the discussion table for a long time.
“We will share our views on fishing licenses with the Guyanese authorities, with a view to a constructive solution that benefits both Suriname and Guyana,’ he said.
In addition, the border issue between Suriname and Guyana will be discussed, as well as regional issues such as the territorial dispute between Guyana and Venezuela. The situation in Haiti is also on the agenda.
“We must work together as a region to find solutions to challenges that affect us all,” Ramdin said, adding that the delegation will also hold talks with the Guyana business chamber, with President Chan Santokhi attending virtually.
“We want to promote as many investments as possible in both countries. This offers opportunities for economic growth and further strengthens our bilateral ties,” Ramdin said.
In addition, talks on gas development are planned with Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, in which the director of Staatsolie, Annand Jagesar, and his team will also be involved.
“The possibilities for cooperation in the field of gas development are promising. We want to learn from each other and take steps together towards sustainable energy development,” Ramdin states in a press release.
“The visit once again highlights the strong ties between Suriname and Guyana and underlines the shared ambition to work together on economic and political progress,” Ramdin added.
