PARAMARIBO, Suriname. CMC -The opposition National Party Suriname (NPS) has initiated court proceedings against the Independent Electoral Bureau (OKB) after claiming that the electoral body has refused to register the party in the public register for political parties.
The NPS, which was formed in 1987 and was a member of President Chan Santokhi’s current ruling coalition government, said the summary proceedings will be heard for the first time on Thursday.
In February, the NPS, which up until the early 2000s was one of the largest in the Dutch-speaking CARICOM nation, represented the middle and professional classes. After a change in the statutes, the NPS wanted to re-register with the OKB.
However, the OKB said the NPS’s statutes do not comply with the Decree on Political Organisations and that the party must bring its statutes into line with the law.
However, the NPS has argued that the OKB is not authorized to assess the party’s statutes, and through court proceedings, it wants the OKB to be ordered to accept the registration in the public register.
The NPS said it has taken the legal matter, given that the date for the next election, May 25, next year, has been announced.
