Heavily armed [police descend on headquarters of opposition WIN party on Wednesday night

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The recently formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party of presidential candidate, Azruddin Mohamed, Thursday described as an “abuse of power” after police officers showed up at the campaign headquarters party late on Wednesday night demanding to meet with Mohamed.

The police have so far remained mum on the reasons for their presence at the campaign headquarters of Mohamed, who is among several candidates registered to contest the regional and general election on September 1.

Media reports showed some of the police officers armed with high-powered weapons.

“This reckless action and abuse of power by the Guyana Police Force instilled fear in family members, staff, and onlookers present at the time. We are therefore sending a strong message to the political directorate: we will not be intimidated,” WIN said in its statement on Thursday.

“These fear-mongering tactics will not silence us, and we urge members of the Guyana Police Force not to allow themselves to be weaponized against political opponents of the ruling party”, the party said, adding that it intends to raise the issue with the international observer missions currently stationed in Guyana.

“To the observer missions, we urge you to take note. Democracy is not only measured on election day but by how political opponents are treated every day leading up to it. We call on you to speak up and intervene where necessary to ensure the integrity of this election process”, the party’s statement noted.

Earlier, Mohamed, a multi-millionaire businessman, told reporters that the police had gone to one of his properties in Providence, East Bank Demerara, to arrest him. Still, he had no idea of what charges.

He claimed he was reliably informed that he was wanted for alleged obstruction of justice in connection with one of his supporters, who is wanted for alleged assault, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, threatening behaviour, threatening language, obscene language, and disorderly behaviour.

On his Team Mohamed’s Facebook page, a post, accompanied by a video of police in a compound, states: “This is what kind of democracy, three vans load of officers armed with rifles forced themselves into private property to arrest Mr Mohamed at 11:30 pm. These officers are sick and tired of taking instructions from politicians”.
