UWI Blackbirds players celebrating after capturing the inaugural Prime Minister’s Cup

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The University of the West Indies (UWI) Blackbirds are flying high after they pocketed US$ 50,000 by defeating Brittons Hill FC 3-2 in extra time to capture the inaugural Prime Minister’s Cup here on Saturday at Kensington Oval.

Brittons Hill took the lead in the 38th minute when striker Corey Hoyte showed exceptional footwork before producing a spectacular finish to power the ball past UWI’s goalkeeper Shaquan Phillips.

However, tournament MVP and UWI’s star player Niall Reid-Stephen made it 1-1 four minutes later when he received a pinpoint cross from Romario Drakes and sent his shot past Britton Hill’s custodian Kerry Holder.

After both teams squandered several opportunities to take the lead, the score remained tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.

UWI put themselves in prime position to win the contest when midfielders Jaron Oughterson and Drakes found the back of the net in the 97th and 101st minutes, respectively, to give their side a commanding 3-1 lead in the first half of extra time.

The Blackbirds suffered a few nervous moments after Brittons Hill’s Sheran Hoyte netted in the match’s final moments, but it was too late, as they held on to secure a historic win.

Brittons Hill took home US$ 12,500 as runners-up.
