LONDON, CMC – Exeter City footballer Jevani Brown, a former Jamaica youth international, is now set to appear in an English southwest court charged with assaulting a woman next month.
The 28-year-old UK-born player was listed to appear at Exeter Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning, but the case was adjourned without evidence being heard.
Police were called to Queen Street in Exeter – the county town of Devon – in the early hours of Thursday, February 2, following reports of a female being assaulted in the area. Officers attended, and an arrest was made.
Brown faces a single allegation that on February 2 at Musgrave Row, he assaulted a female by beating her.
A statement from Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Police have since charged a man in connection to this matter. Jevani Jason Brown, aged 28, originally from Luton but currently residing in Exeter, has been charged with assault by beating.”
The club’s top goalscorer, who will not feature for League One side Exeter – nicknamed the Grecians – until legal proceedings have been concluded, did not appear at court on Thursday and is yet to enter a plea.
Magistrates adjourned the case to March 9. Brown is currently on bail.
A statement previously released by Exeter City Football Club said: “Exeter City Football Club is aware of the charge made against Jevani Brown. As this is a legal matter, we cannot comment until legal proceedings have been concluded. He will not be selected to play during this period.”
However, a new statement released Thursday evening said: “The case against Jevani Brown, which was due to be heard at Exeter Magistrates’ Court today, has been adjourned to March 9.”
Brown is Exeter top scorer this season with 14 goals. He has provided nine more assists and has the second-highest goal contributions in League One.
