TORONTO, Canada, CMC – Former president of the Guyana-based Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM), Wesley Gibbings, has been re-elected to the Council of the Canada-based International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX)

The Trinidadian-born Gibbings were elected by a virtual vote involving more than 100 global organizations. He is now part of a team of 13 free expression and press freedom advocates from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

“It is an honor to have been re-elected to the IFEX Council. I have been here before and know how important it is for the Caribbean to have a voice on matters of global concern which resonate so strongly in our region,” said the award-winning journalist and media trainer, who is also Vice President of the Jamaica-based Media Institute of the Caribbean (MIC).

“I thank the ACM for the nomination and the other organizations that joined in support of an organization that has played a key role in ensuring that freedom of expression and other rights are closely guarded at a time of great challenges in the Caribbean. I promise to live up to their expectations,” said Gibbings, whose election to the IFEX position was announced at the 2023 Annual Meeting, hosted virtually on Thursday.
