BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC—The Barbados-based Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) said Friday it wanted to assure all stakeholders of the integrity of its Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Chemistry Unit 2 Paper 02 examination, which was conducted on May 9 this year across the region.

AA statement said that concerns had been raised that the examination questions were focused on material from the CAPE Chemistry Unit 1 syllabus rather than the Chemistry Unit 2 syllabus.

“Mindful of the anxiety among candidates and parents arising from these concerns, CXC immediately investigated this matter. These investigations have determined that the questions on the CAPE Chemistry Unit 2 Paper 02 examination were designed for candidates to demonstrate knowledge of material covered by the CAPE Chemistry Unit 2 syllabus.”

CXC said that as it continues “to listen to the concerns by engaging with stakeholders, we stand by our robust quality assurance system, which includes qualified professionals at all stages of the examination development process, ensuring the efficacy of the examinations. “This system also allows for adjustments during the marking and grading process to ensure that candidates are not negatively affected by circumstances outside their control.”

CXC said that the integrity of its assessments “is critical to candidates and the currency of our qualifications, in keeping with our mission to ‘develop the human capital of our Caribbean people through partnerships for global competitiveness.”

Earlier this month, the CXC said it had commenced” investigations” into the circumstances surrounding an issue with the distribution of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Principles of Accounts Paper 02, at specific centres.

CXC had earlier issued a statement denying reports on social media that “an examination paper” had been leaked.

In May last year, CXC identified Jamaica as the country where its Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Math Paper 02 examination paper had been leaked.

Established in 1972, the CXC is an institution that provides regional and internationally recognized secondary school leaving examinations relevant to the region’s needs, assists in Common Entrance and other types of examinations, produces teaching materials, and trains teachers to use the CXC syllabi.

CXC offers a comprehensive suite of qualifications to meet the region’s needs, namely CSEC, Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC), Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ), Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE), and the CXC Associate Degree (CXC-AD).
