On this unfortunate occasion, Antigua and Barbuda stand united with the people of India, and our prayers are with the families of the victims of this most unfortunate tragedy. We share in your grief as your Government and people rush to save lives and comfort those who have lost loved ones and friends,’ Browne wrote.

For his part, Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali told his counterpart, Draupadi Murmu, that “Guyana stands in solidarity with India during this difficult time.

“On behalf of the Government and people of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, I extend my sincere condolences to you and the people of India, especially to all those affected by this devastating incident. Please convey my sympathies to the families who have lost their loved ones. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those injured, wishing them a swift recovery,” he wrote.

The Indian authorities have since launched an investigation into the three train crash on Friday night, examining whether a signal failure led to the disaster, as rescue workers continued their search for survivors and overturned train cars were cleared from the tracks.

Less than 48 hours after the devastating crash in eastern Odisha state, which left at least 275 dead and more than 1,000 injured, officials were rushing to resume rail services, even as the rail routes were still blocked, and family members of deceased passengers had to find their way by other means to claim their loved ones.

The catastrophic collision happened when the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express derailed, colliding with a freight train on the adjacent track. The Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, coming from the opposite direction on the third track, crashed into the two derailed coaches. Railway officials said over 3,400 passengers were traveling in the two trains.
