
TORUN, Poland, CMC – Jereem ‘The Dream’ Richards gave Trinidad and Tobago its first medal of the World Athletics Indoor Championships when he captured bronze in the men’s 400 metres here on Saturday.
Richards crossed the finish line in a season’s best time of 45.39 seconds to finish third behind winner Christopher Williams of Canada, who set a new championship record of 44.76, and second-placed Khaleb McRae, who grabbed silver in 45.03.
Meanwhile, Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred and the Jamaican duo of Jonielle Smith and Brianna Lyston carry hopes of a Caribbean clean sweep in the women’s 60 metres after they all advanced to the final.
Alfred, the reigning Olympic champion, won Heat 1 in 7.04 seconds, the same time awarded to second-placed Jacious Sears of the USA.
Lyston was a close third in 7.05 seconds and booked her spot as one of the fastest times outside the top two positions.
Smith was in commanding form in Heat 3 on her way to winning in a personal best time of 7.03 seconds.
