GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC—The Guyana government announced Tuesday that India’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, will pay a State visit to the country from November 19 to 21.
A statement from the Office of the President said that the visit underlines the “historically strong relations between India and Guyana” and that President Irfaan Ali had visited India in January last year as the Chief Guest at the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, where he was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman.
The statement said that during his state visit, Modi would engage in summit-level bilateral discussions with Ali and co-chair the second India-CARICOM Summit alongside Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, the current CARICOM chairman, and President Alli.
It said that Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to address the National Assembly and the Indian community and diaspora in Guyana.
Additionally, Modi will offer a floral tribute to the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Promenade Garden in Georgetown, which was installed in 1969 during the centenary celebrations.
The statement added that he would also visit the Indian Arrival Monument in the Monument Garden, which commemorates the arrival of the first ship carrying Indian indentured laborers to the Caribbean. The boat arrived on the shores of the then-British Guiana in 1838.
