GLENDALE, Arizona, CMC – Haiti’s CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-final chances suffered a blow on Thursday when they crashed to a 3-1 defeat to powerhouses Mexico.
The contest at State Farm Stadium was goalless at the break, but the floodgates opened in the second half, Henry Martin putting Mexico ahead in the 46th minute before Ricardo Adé’s 56th-minute own goal and Santiago Giménez’s 83rd-minute strike completed the blowout.
Danley Jean halved the lead in the 78th minute for Haiti, but the third Mexico goal sapped the French Caribbean side of hope.
With the defeat, Haiti remained second in Group B on three points, while Mexico’s second win saw them move to six at the summit.
Edson Alvarez struck the post from point-blank range in the fourth minute as Mexico sent early warning signals before Haiti responded through Carlens Arcus, whose drive sizzled past the uprights moments later.
But despite the lively half, neither team managed to convert, leaving the scores locked nil-all at the break.
However, Martin handed Mexico the lead almost immediately upon the resumption, heading in a cross from the center of the six-yard box before Adé steered the ball into his net, attempting to cut out Jesús Gallardo’s dangerous pass into the area.
Jean resurrected hope for Haiti when he eluded his markers in the area to nod past Guillermo Ochoa. Still, Uriel Antuna set up Giménez following a quick counter-attack to seal the result.
